Big fish, little fish

Dear 25 year old me,

Let me tell you about a crucial career decision that you’ll need to make. There will be a crossroads where you inevitably must decide whether you want to be part of a small business or move into the big corporate world.

You think long and hard about the pros and cons.

The corporate world with those sky high ladders to climb, more minds to learn from, perhaps greater opportunity for career growth. I know you’re ambitious and dream big so this could be a great union.

Small business is appealing from another perspective. You’ll have more responsibility and will be challenged daily in the varying roles you’ll need to perform. You’ll have an opportunity to change and grow the business. You will have a voice.

At the end of it all, what you’ll really be deciding is whether you’d be happier as a small fish in a big pond, or a big fish in a small pond.

It’s a tough decision kiddo and there’s no right or wrong answer, however I can say that you finally do make this big choice. You choose to go on the small business road and it’s been a rewarding journey ever since.

While I can’t tell you whether the grass is greener on the other side, these are the things I can share about the journey you’ll experience;

Sharing the load & knowledge.

You get to intimately experience both the ups and downs, learning about and sharing the pressures of running the business.

Your voice is heard.

In a small team environment communication is more transparent. Every voice is valued, ideas heard and opinions shared. Your confidence will grow daily.

It’s easier to adapt.

Changes to processes are easier to manage in an adaptive setting. The need for change is also recognised sooner and faster to enact. Your role can also evolve to your strengths, passions and the business needs.

There’s no hiding.

There’s definitely no hiding being big teams and office doors. It’s a world of task ownership and much responsibility, but as a result, also very rewarding.

Relationships are formed.

Needless to say a team that bonds together, stays together. Small teams are easier to build and grow a healthy culture with. Trust and loyalty are naturally formed in positive environments.

You can be proud.

Everything you do will have a greater purpose and the whole team will be constantly be working towards a common goal. Small business is rich in fulfilment. You’ll be proud of your work and of the great people that work alongside you.

These are just a few of the aspects of going down the small business road, however I can definitely assure you that it’s been a challenging and rewarding experience.

Love from,

Patima x
